ABOUT THIS PROJECT

“I never thought that milk truck ride would eventually lead to Cooperstown and baseball’s highest honor,” Red Schoendienst said during his 1989 Hall of Fame Induction speech.

This milk truck ride was one Schoendienst hitched to Sportsman’s Park in 1942 to attend an open tryout for the St. Louis Cardinals during World War II. By 1945, Schoendienst made the Cardinals roster, and he would spend 15 seasons with the club.

A nine-time All-Star and World Series champion, Schoendienst hung up his cleats in 1963 following a 19-year career with the Cardinals, the New York Giants and the Milwaukee Braves. Just two years later, he would take the helm in St. Louis as manager, piloting the team to a pair of National League pennants and the 1967 World Series crown.

Schoendienst was a mainstay in the St. Louis clubhouse as a player, coach and manager. He was a reminder of the franchise’s rich history from the days of Stan Musial and Bob Gibson to Whitey Herzog and Ozzie Smith, through the era of Tony La Russa and Albert Pujols.

Today, Schoendienst's glove is in need of conservation. Please consider a a gift to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum to help preserve this artifact as part of his legacy from St. Louis to Cooperstown.
