ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Standing at a mere 5 feet 6 inches, Phil Rizzuto never towered over the infield, but his impact on the game was beyond measure.

The shortstop's small-ball approach and his selflessness in the field and at the plate helped the New York Yankees capture eight World Series Championships during his 13-year career.

"I hustled and got on base and made the double play," Rizzuto said. "That's all the Yankees needed in those days, somebody who could get on base, make the double play and not make too many errors. The other guys did all the work, all the RBIs and home runs."

Rizzuto's work with the club did not go unnoticed, as the Brooklyn native earned five All-Star selections and was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1950 after posting career-highs in hits, batting average, on-base percentage, runs, home runs, walks, doubles and slugging percentage. He would receive AL MVP votes in seven additional seasons throughout his career, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1994.

"All the Yankees knew how important he was to the ball club. The heart of the team on defense is up the middle and there were few better than Phil there," said teammate Gil McDougald.

Today, Rizzuto's glove that helped him turn 1,217 double plays is in need of conservation. Your generosity makes a tremendous impact on our mission to preserve the history of the game and honor Baseball's Greatest Team. Please consider a donation to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum to help conserve this artifact.
